Asma Rani case: Prime accused given death penalty for murder

The primary culprit in the Asma Rani murder case was sentenced to death by a district and sessions court on Friday.

Sessions and Districts After reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, Judge Ashfaq Taj convicted the main defendant, Mujahidullah Afridi, to death.

After refusing a marriage proposal, Asma Rani, a third-year medical student, was shot in Kohat in January 2018. After being shot three times, she was transported to a local hospital. Before dying to her wounds, she named Mujahidullah Afridi as the assailant in a video statement.

Afridi escaped the nation and was added to Interpol’s most-wanted list. In March 2018, he was apprehended in Dubai with the aid of Interpol and deported to Pakistan. Due to security concerns, the case was moved from Kohat to Peshawar.

The hearing was held at the Peshawar Central Jail on Friday by a district and sessions judge. Afridi was condemned to death, while two other defendants, Siddiqullah and Shahzeb, were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Mujahid Afridi shot Asma Rani while she was going home in a rickshaw with her sister-in-law, according to her relatives. She was shot three times and sent to a hospital in serious condition, where she died from her injuries.

On the allegation of the deceased’s brother, Muhammad Irfan, police had filed an FIR under Sections 324 and 304 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
