Pakistan is celebrating World Environment Day today, and the country took the initiative to host the event owing to its recognition in nature-based solutions and eco-system restoration.
In terms of repeating natural disasters and increased vulnerability owing to climate change, the South Asian country has consistently ranked among the top ten countries suffering severe consequences of climate change.
Pakistan has made significant progress in recent years in promoting nature conservation, climate action, and community development, as well as gender-inclusive strategies, using its limited resources to provide equal opportunities to women in the most vulnerable areas affected by environmental degradation.

Pakistan has declared that it would host World Environment Day in 2021 in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
In commemoration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the high-level coalition of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Environment Programme asked Pakistan to host Environment Day (UNGA).
The UN also offered Pakistan the honour of being considered a world pioneer in nature-based solutions and ecosystem restoration efforts such as the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Plantation and the Protected Area Initiative.

The subject of this year’s World Environment Day is ‘ecosystem restoration,’ with an emphasis on restoring our relationship with the environment.
